Heikki Kovalainen could make a return to McLaren next season if Lewis Hamilton decides to leave the team, according to a report.

Hamilton's contract with the Woking-based squad runs out at the end of this campaign and, although there have been indications that both parties want to renew it, speculation linking him with a move to Mercedes refuses to go away.

McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh has admitted they have 'no Plan B' should he decide to quit the team, but the Daily Mail claims Caterham's Kovalainen along with Sauber's Sergio Perez and Paul di Resta from Force India are on the "possible replacement list".

The 30-year-old Kovalainen partnered Hamilton at McLaren during the 2008 and 2009 seasons before moving to Lotus Racing (now Caterham) after being replaced by Jenson Button.

According to the report the Finn "remains highly regarded by the McLaren powerbrokers".
