Pirelli: We did our job

Pirelli chairman Marco Tronchetti Provera has praised the company's performances in 2012, saying their tyres did the job of upping the excitement.

Last year seven different drivers won the opening seven grands prix, prompting both praise and criticism for the Pirelli tyres which were deemed to be responsible.

As the season progressed, though, the usual suspects came to the fore with Red Bull and McLaren winning nine of the final ten grands prix.

"I think that we did our job," Tronchetti Provera told Autosport. "We were asked to create more excitement, and more fun.

"At the end of the day the good drivers and good cars prevailed and that means we did a good job.

"The tyres were performing well and it was a question of knowing them better, and everyone was satisfied at the end of the season."

It remains to be seen whether this season mimics the first or the second half of last year's Championship as Pirelli have opted for a more aggressive approach to their compounds.

"Last year, we had the combination of tyre choices and compound choices which were intentionally difficult, but they were combined with big changes on the car that meant the teams could not really balance the performance or downforce between the front and rear axis of the car," said motorsport director Paul Hembrey.

"That led to temperature imbalances and that amplified any changes we made with compound.

"We are now in a situation where the cars are, by and large, based on what we had last season, so it is evolution rather than revolution. The teams will be starting from a better starting point.

"We don't have quite as many head scratching sessions going on for the teams, but the changes are substantial in the sense that as the tyres are more aggressive, they will degrade more, as there is more energy going into them."
