Alonso 'will' outscore Vettel in US GP

Fernando Alonso is adamant he will score more points than Sebastian Vettel in Sunday's United States GP despite his disappointing qualifying.

Ahead of Sunday's grand prix, the Championship duo are separated by ten points in Vettel's favour. However, the points margin is not the only thing in Vettel's favour.

The Red Bull driver is also starting Sunday's US GP from pole position having proven to be the one to beat throughout the weekend. Alonso is down in eighth and that is after being boosted up one slot due to Romain Grosjean's gearbox penalty.

But despite failing to match his title rival, Alonso, who was not shocked by his dismal showing in qualifying, is convinced he can beat him come Sunday.

"Yes, we expected it," Alonso told Autosport.

"We knew it was going to be complicated. We started seventh in Abu Dhabi and eighth here, so more or less the positions have been the same.

"As always, the race is tomorrow. I still think that tomorrow we are going to reduce the gap to Sebastian, which is what counts.

"He starts from pole and he has a very strong pace, but the race will be long and let's see if we can seize our opportunities."

He added: "We'll see how the start goes. If he wins the race and then wins again in Brazil he will be Champion and deservedly so.

"We are fighting to make it into Q3, so we have got here miraculously and we are going to try to hang on to hope.

"As I said, for whatever reason, I have the strange feeling that tomorrow we will reduce the gap."
