The suspicion that Fernando Alonso was light on fuel in qualifying for the Spanish GP has been all-but confirmed by Renault's Pat Symonds.
The Spaniard stunned himself as much as his legion of supporters at Barcelona by taking a front-row grid-slot in a car that has otherwise struggled to compete all season. The only logical conclusion was that Alonso was carrying significantly less fuel than his rivals - something which Symonds effectively admitted when he spoke to ITV.
"Obviously there is some strategy involved," the Renault technical chief confirmed when asked to explain Alonso's unexpected resurgence. "But I am really pleased to see the proof of the work that we have been doing over the last few months.
"I don't think it would be any secret to say that Fernando and Nelson are not on the same strategy."
