Heidfeld: I'm not doing too badly

Wednesday 23rd July 2008

Just more than a month ago there was talk that Nick Heidfeld is driving for his career after being overshadowed by his team-mate Robert Kubica.

Heidfeld couldn't match his team-mate during qualifying, let alone keep up with him during races. Rumours that BMW were lining up a move for Renault's Fernando Alonso also didn't help his cause.

However, the German turned things around at the British Grand Prix where he not only outqualified Kubica, but he also claimed second place behind Lewis Hamilton.

Heidfeld believes he hasn't done too badly, but says his current form won't affect contract renewal talks with BMW.

"I cannot speak about the contractual situation," Heidfeld told Autosport.

"But I think if somebody like me that has obviously had some problems until now, up until this race, is only 12 points behind the Championship leaders, and only seven points behind Robert, who was said to be the best driver this year, then it is not that bad."

Heidfeld says everything started to fall into place once he sorted out his qualifying woes.

"In qualifying I did some mistakes, but it was not like two races ago where I was simply too slow and I didn't know what it was.

"In Q2 I knew I could have done it but I just messed up two corners. I think it is now going in the right direction and this makes me very happy."
