Heikki Kovalainen will in all likelihood partner Lewis Hamilton at McLaren next season, according to Mercedes motorsport director Norbert Haug.
Kovalainen signed a one-year deal with the Woking-based squad at the end of last year after impressing at Renault, but he has been overshadowed by his team-mate throughout this campaign.
The Finn is currently sixth in the World Championship race with 28 points while Hamilton is sitting on top of the standings with 58 points.
Haug told Deutsche Presse-Agentur: "It is to be assumed that Kovalainen will remain with us."
However, Haug insists they "options" for next season should they opt not to extend Kovalainen's contract, saying "we are under no pressure and have no deadline."
