Brawn backtracks on 2009 driver line-up

Sunday 20th July 2008

Just days after saying "yes" Jenson Button and Rubens Barrichello will be Honda's drivers next season, Ross Brawn has been forced backtrack on his statement.

Brawn on Friday told the official F1 website that the team will have the same two drivers next season.

However, Barrichello on Saturday denied that he has already signed a new deal with the Brackley-based squad, which forced Brawn to play down his earlier comments.

The Honda team boss told Autosport: "Well, nothing is certain. There is a possibility about where we will end, but there is nothing definitive at the moment.

"We are moving towards a solution with the two drivers we have, but nothing is done yet.

"That's not a decision we have made yet, no."

Nick Fry, the team's CEO, is refusing to rule out the possibility that both drivers will be Honda next season.

"No, I wouldn't be surprised if we had the same drivers next year because they have done a good job, they are both doing a similar job, and we haven't yet been able to give them a car they deserve. It wouldn't be a surprise," he said.
